Registration for First Year of PhD

To be admitted to the first year of a PhD program, candidates must meet the following conditions:

  • Hold a master's degree awarded by a French university. The average grade of the master's degree—calculated from the averages of the 4 semesters (must be at least 12/20).
  • Have obtained the agreement of a thesis supervisor who is qualified to direct research (HDR).
  • Exceptionally, the doctoral college may admit candidates who have obtained a research master's degree with a two-year average (M1 or equivalent + M2) between 11 and 11.99, subject to prior examination of the application by the Doctoral Training Committee of the UHA site’s doctoral college, which provides an opinion on the registration.
  • Candidates whose degree equivalent to M2 is awarded by a foreign university must request a waiver for the French master’s degree. To save time, it is advisable to submit the corresponding application as early as possible. The waiver request is examined by the Doctoral Training Committee of the doctoral college and must be sent to the secretariat (ecoles.doctorales @ uha.fr) 15 days before the CFD meets.

Registrations for the first year of a PhD typically take place from July 1 to October 31. However, registrations may still be possible beyond this period for doctoral candidates benefiting from specific funding (CIFRE, etc.).

Registration for a PhD is online on Amethis

List of documents requested for the registration, signed by the PhD student, thesis supervisor and research unit director for initial registration:

  • a letter from the future thesis director presenting the dossier (list of documents), the candidate and the thesis project, with endorsement from the director of the research unit,
  • a funding certificate indicating the source of funding and the net or gross monthly amount for three years: the amount must be at least equivalent to that of a University doctoral contract (2200€ gross per month). Holders of a doctoral contract awarded by the ED are exempt from providing this document,
  • a detailed curriculum vitae describing the candidate's academic career, with a list of any work completed,
  • a certificate of completion or a copy of the master's diploma (with translation if necessary),
  • a copy of the final transcripts of the master's degree (year bac+4 and bac+5),
  • the STEP thesis registration form,
  • the doctoral charter, read, approved and signed by all parties,
  • the individuel training agreement (CIF) to be sent within 6 months after registration.

N.B. : applications for D1 registration from candidates who do not have an institutionnal doctoral contract must be approved in advance by the relevant Doctoral Training Commission.

Once your application has been validated by the UHA Antenne du Collège doctoral, you must finalize your administrative registration by following step 2.

  1. Before registering administratively at the Université de Haute-Alsace, you need to regularize your student life and campus contribution (CVEC) to obtain your CVEC certificate and code. This compulsory contribution amounts to 105€.
  2. Register fully online: First registration - IA PRIMO Online payment of schooling fees is made at the end of the procedure. Before you start, be sure to have your:
    - OPI number (received following your application via Amethis),
    - your CVEC number as shown on your certificate of payment,
    - a valid credit card,
    - a valid e-mail address so that you can receive confirmation of receipt of your online payment.
  3. Once you've registered, you'll need to submit the required documents, the list of which will appear on your registration summary via this link to PJ Web (functional from 1 to 25 July 2025 then from 18 August to 31 October 2025 only, after this date, please contact scolarite @ uha.fr).
  4. An administrator checks the information entered and the documents submitted, and if your file is complete, validates your registration. You will then receive an automatic notification on your firstname.lastname@uha.fr email address and your registration receipt by post.

For doctoral candidates recruited under a doctoral contract at UHA (CDE)

To establish a doctoral contract, you must be academically registered with the doctoral training unit -Antenne of the Site Doctoral College.

The doctoral contract will begin no earlier than October 1 of each year. You cannot start working without having signed your employment contract with the Human Resources Department.
